Develop a Learning Attitude

When you approach a discussion, with an attitude of learning something new, you look forward to understand every information that comes up in the discussion clearly. So, a change in attitude helps you in grasping informations clearly and quickly.

When you have understood things clearly, you will also have an idea about the level of understanding of other participants in the discussion about the topic. Then, you can help them by explaining about the topics, at points where they are less aware.

In a discussion, when things are getting clearer to everyone, new ideas come up. This increases the level of interest in every participant, which leads to a healthy discussion.

At the end of discussion, when people have understood new ideas, they will feel good having a conversation with you. This increases level of trust by them in you, which further enhances interpersonal relationships.

Build a Rapport

Rapport is a state of total responsiveness between 2 or more people. When a rapport is built between 2 or more people, then, there is a feeling of trust between them. When there is a feeling of trust, then, it is easier to start and build a good relationship. And, when there is a good relationship, then, one can get the benefit that he desires from the other person.

One of the ways to develop a rapport is by matching and mirroring.

Matching and mirroring is a technique, wherein, you try to match and mirror other people's voice, posture, facial expressions, eye contact. This technique is based on a simple human behaviour that people tend to like people who are like themselves, or how they like to be. Basically, it develops a feeling of commonality between people, which then makes it easier to build trust and relationship.

Under voice, there are different aspects, which you could mirror. For example, tone, tempo, volume, accent. Tone can be rough, smooth, or somewhere between rough and smooth. Tempo can be fast, slow, or normal. Volume can be loud, soft, or normal. Accent varies according to the place where the person is from. For example, it can be British, American, Australian, etc.

Then, posture can be upright, or more relaxed. Facial expressions vary according to mood of the person. Eye contact can be broken at regular intervals, or be fixed for a relatively longer time.
