| As the coronavirus pandemic continues to make a grip in people's life, isolation & quarantine have become important measures to combat this disease. |
During this coronavirus pandemic, we may have come across many people using the terms such as isolation and quarantine. As these have become part of a common day-to-day discussion, it is important that we know exactly what these terms mean. Keeping this in mind, we have tried to explain them in as lucid way as possible.
Isolation & quarantine are measures used to protect the public from exposure to people who have or may have COVID-19, by limiting the movement of people and avoiding the spread in community.
Basically, isolation separates infected people from healthy people. And, quarantine separates those people who were exposed to infected people to check whether they have become infected and start showing symtoms.
At hospital, isolation is used to separate patients who have COVID-19 from other healthy people. Isolation is also done in household setting. If a person showing COVID-19 symptoms has undergone a coronavirus test, and results are pending, then he must isolate himself in his home, until results of the test are available.
What is the duration of isolation & quarantine?
The duration of isolation is until the patient admitted in a hospital has fully recovered from the disease.
Whereas, the duration of quarantine is the length of incubation period of COVID-19, which is 14 days.
Who should undergo isolation & quarantine?
Usually, when a person is tested positive for coronavirus, he is admitted in a hospital for treatment, which is done under complete isolation. So, coronavirus positive patients or sick patients are the ones who undergo isolation.
People undergoing quarantine are usually those who have recently visited an area of outbreak, or those who have come into contact with confirmed cases.
What is home isolation?
When a person tests positive for COVID-19, but is not severly ill, then such a person may isolate himself at home, rather than getting admitted in hospital. This type of isolation which is done in home is called home isolation.
Home isolation is useful when there are a large number of cases, and all of them cannot be admitted in hospital.

| During isolation and quarantine, individuals are not allowed to get out of their place, and visit public locations such as restaurants, bar, saloons and theaters. |
What is self-quarantine?
When a person chooses to undergo quarantine himself due to suspicion of getting infected, then this is known as self-quarantine.
What are the criteria for home isolation?
During home isolation, the person is not allowed to leave his home, unless there is an emergency. Even if you have to go out, it is best if you do so in a private vehicle.
At home, the person should use a separate bedroom and even a separate bathroom, if possible. He should eat in a separate room. Utensils such as cup, plates, towel should also not be shared.
In some areas, violating isolation rules may lead to fines and charges. So, its best if we understand and follow all the rules.
Is isolation & quarantine authorised?
In most cases, isolation and quarantine are done voluntarily. However, during public health concern, government is able to enforce isolation and quarantine to those who are susceptible.
