Qualities of a Great Leader

A leader has a vision, can explain his vision to his team, and knows how to make the vision a reality.

Basically, leadership is the ability to guide individuals, team, or organisation toward achieving goals and objectives. Besides guidance, leadership also encompasses taking responsibility, motivating others, improving work environment, and increasing work efficiency.

A leader has a vision and knows how to achieve it through the help of his team or organisation. Using his knowledge, he guides them at every difficult step during the process. Not only does he guide them, but also plays a major part in the whole process himself.

Most people have a misconception that leadership skills are achieved only by birth. However, this is not true. With time and practise, one can acquire all the essential leadership skills.

1. COMMUNICATION

A leader should have good communication skills. He should be able to explain the vision, mission, goals, objectives of the organisation to his employees clearly heart-to-heart.

When a person can communicate effectively, he can understand the other person better, his strong points and weak points, and how his attributes can be of value to the organisation.

2. VISIONARY

A leader should have far-sighted vision and know exactly where he wants to drive his team or organisation. In addition, he should be able to make his team understand his vision, so that they are directed in a path towards the vision.

3. INTEGRITY

"Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching." This quote literally sums up the definition of integrity quite easily.

It is a trait which is inevitable in a good leader. If a leader has good integrity, then his team members also follow the same path shown by their leader.

4. CONFIDENT

A good leader has full belief in his plans and knows where he is taking his team or organisation. By being confident, it doesn't mean acting confident, but confidence should ooze through your actions effortlessly.

When a leader is not confident, his team or members of his organisation spot that rather quickly. And, when this happens, chances are that they may start developing doubts over their leader and stop following his lead.

Besides being a visionary and having excellent communication skills, a leader should also have qualities such as empathy and adaptiveness.

5. TRUSTWORTHY

A good leader should be able to build trust amongst the members of his team or organisation. They should trust the qualities of the leader and be sure that he is the right person to lead them. Plus, they should also be able to trust the vision shown by him. Only if the leader is able to build trust amongst his people, they will put in the required effort towards his vision.

6. ADAPTIVE

Good leaders do not remain static and adapt to situation they come across. They find solutions to problems and keep themselves relevant to changing times. With his adaptive skill, he is able to guide his team and organisation forward against any obstacles, towards the vision he has seen.

7. INSPIRATIONAL

When your team has a low morale or is drained after a heavy work, you as a leader should be able to inspire and uplift them.

A simple appreciation and encouragement every now and then will be of great help in lifting their spirits.

8. EMPATHY

Empathy is the ability to put oneself in other people's shoes and understand how they are feeling. Good leaders understand how their employees are feeling and act accordingly. Whether their employees need some encouragement, praise, or some help, good leaders do so effectively.

9. DELEGATE

No matter how good a leader is in his field of interest, he cannot do all the work by himself. He should divide the work load and delegate members who are best suitable to do the work. By doing so, it shows that the leader has full faith in the ability of his members, which in turn increases their morale.

10. RESILIENCE

In today's fast-pace world, changes occur at almost every step. To meet these changing demands, leaders need to be resilient and resourceful. They need to show grit through which they are able to tackle any new challenge that come their way.

These are some of the skills required in a good leader. Some of these skills are present inborn in a person, whereas others can be acquired over time through consistent practice.
